The following is a guest post with 3 practical tips to organize your closet like a pro from regular contributor, Morgan from Morganize with Me.
It’s almost time for me to shift from my spring/summer capsule wardrobe to my fall/winter capsule wardrobe. So, in preparation, I made a point to go through all of my clothes and relook at every item. Within only 20 minutes, I was able to fill up an entire sack with clothes that I didn’t want to keep anymore.
This surprised me because I’m an intentional shopper and I diligently work to minimize the number of pieces I keep in my closet. Yet, I was still able to edit twenty plus items! In looking at the pile of clothes that I no longer wanted, I realized I needed to revisit some of my own closet organizing tips. I was clearly slacking in the intentionality department if that many pieces weren’t working for me! So, here are three tips to help you (and me) keep our closets more organized.
3 Tips to Organize Your Closet Tip #1 – Try things on
When shopping for clothes, don’t buy before you try. Take a bunch of things with you to the fitting room and then try on every single piece. You’ll be amazed at how fast you can eliminate what you might have otherwise bought. You need to feel how things feel. Check the fit, length, and if the color and/or style work for you. Something can be “cute” on the hanger and then feel anything but cute when you put in on.
Tip #2 – Take your time
Don’t just buy to buy. Instead, pursue the best long term option. Recently, I needed a new bra and I chose to buy an inexpensive one. After only a couple of months, I couldn’t stand to wear it anymore. It was uncomfortable and didn’t fit me well. So, then I ended up going out and buying a more expensive bra in order to get a better quality and fit. If I had been more purposeful, I could have saved myself time and money. (Please note, I’m not suggesting that a higher price tag equals higher quality, but in some cases I have found this to be true.)
Tip #3 – Tune in to your style
Embrace your style. Know what colors look good on you. Know what fit is the most flattering on you. And know what YOU like to wear. This is the best way to eliminate purchasing those pieces that you’ll never end up wearing. When going through my clothes I realized that I had been making some shopping choices that didn’t fall under my personal style. For example, the bright fuchsia shirt with the bell sleeves looked frumpy on me and the tunic shirt my daughter had passed on to me didn’t fit me well.
Maintaining a streamlined closet takes an intentional effort. In fact, we tend to wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. So I say, let’s change that percentage. Let’s work to wear a higher percentage of our clothes. Let’s work to fill our closets with only those pieces that we love! Are you in?
